| Category P - is for mopeds,
machines with an engine not exceeding 50cc, a maximum design speed of 31mph/50kph
and a kerb weight no more than 250kg. The machine can be geared or
twist-and-go.
Sub-category Al - light motorcycle,
which restricts riders to any machine up to 125cc and a power output of
11kW, with a maximum design speed not exceeding 62mph/100kph. The test must be taken on a machine of between 75cc and 125cc.
The machine can be geared or twist-and-go.
Category A - standard motorcycle
licence. The test must be taken on a machine of between 121cc and 125cc,
with a maximum design speed not exceeding 62mph/100kph. The machine can be
geared or twist-and-go. After passing this test you will be restricted for
two years to machines with a power output not exceeding 25kW.
Very few people take their test on a moped
unless that is all they ever want to ride. Sub-category Al motorcycle tests
are seldom taken either. If you take a test in either of these categories
and later wish to ride higher powered machines you will need to take a fresh
practical test, either for Category A to ride 125cc and after two years
higher powered machines or under the
Accelerated Access or
Direct
Access schemes. You will not be required to take CBT or the theory
test again.
If you take your test on a twist-and-go
(automatic) machine you will be restricted to this type of motorcycle. You
will need to pass a further test if you wish to ride a geared 125, other
than on L plates, or higher powered machine subject to your age and licence
(see Direct Access or
Accelerated Access); again
you will not need to re-take CBT or the theory tests. |
