Motorbikes are a fun, easy way to get around. Here are some tips on how to get started and stay on your bike.

Biking can be cheaper than a car but you need to budget for proper clothing, it can be expensive. The right gear is essential if you're unfortunate enough to hit the tarmac. Your clothing may get shredded but it could have been your skin. It's also going to keep you warm, dry and clean. Good quality clothing will last many years, so what may at first seem a high price should be seen as a long term investment.

Although you think it's not going to happen to you, you can be seriously injured even in a minor accident on a bike. We recommend that you buy the best safety clothing you can afford.

Make sure your new helmet is a proper fit, which is quite tight when new, it will ease with time. Try to avoid buying second hand helmets, they may have damage you cannot see. If you're not sure about anything ask your clothing supplier, motorcycle dealer or training organisation for advice. Biking magazines offer good advice to help you pick your gear.

Proper fit of all clothing is absolutely essential. People who have come off their bike will either swear by their quality gear, or just swear about having scrimped on it... once they have been discharged from hospital. Unlike helmets, clothing can be bought second hand, it's not as critical as the helmet and condition can be more readily inspected.

Safety clothing includes a good quality leather or Cordura textile suit, gloves and boots. Always look for the CE Mark or British Standard Kitemark on all clothing and helmets. They show that the equipment has been safety tested and offers a good level of protection.

Some type of eye protection is a good idea, most helmets have a built in visor but even sun glasses will help but don't use them or a tinted visor at night. You only have one pair of eyes to last you a lifetime, make sure you protect them.

Make an effort to be seen by other road users. Wear a high visibility vest on top of your safety gear and ride with your headlamp dipped, neither of these is a legal requirement. When choosing clothing try and select a good colour contrast, our website banner demonstrates how well yellow and black stand out.

Although your safety gear will help protect you if you have a bump, it can't work miracles if you have a major accident.

The idea is learn to ride safely and smoothly!
